The Union Health Ministry and Family Welfare informed that both Indian vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – are effective against the Delta variant of Coronavirus. To what extent these vaccines are effective will be shared shortly, said Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan.
What impact different vaccines have in terms of anti-body titers – that information is available, which we would be sharing very shortly with you,” Bhushan said.
“However, broadly speaking, both the Indian vaccines which we are currently using in Covid vaccination program – we are using three but Sputnik V came quite later – so Covishield and Covaxin both are effective against Delta variant. But to what extent and what’s the proportion of antibody titers that they produce, that we would share with you shortly,” the union health secretary added.
In its statement, the health ministry said the Union Health Secretary has communicated to Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh that the Delta Plus variant has been found in genome sequenced samples from Ratnagiri and Jalgaon Districts of Maharashtra; Palakkad and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala; and Bhopal and Shivpuri districts of Madhya Pradesh.
It said INSACOG has informed that the Delta Plus variant, currently a Variant of Concern (VOC), has the following characteristics:
1. Increased transmissibility
2. Stronger binding to receptors of lung cells
3. Potential reduction in monoclonal antibody response
